Yemisi Ogunleye Wins Silver at Indoor European Championships

Yemisi Ogunleye secures a silver medal in shot put at the Indoor European Championships, while Christina Honsel narrowly misses out on bronze in high jump.

Shot put Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye has clinched a silver medal at the Indoor European Championships, adding another international accolade to her collection. The 26-year-old athlete from Mannheim achieved a distance of 19.56 meters in her second attempt at the event held in Apeldoorn.

The gold medal was claimed decisively by two-time outdoor European champion Jessica Schilder, who dominated the competition with a world-leading performance of 20.69 meters. The bronze medal went to Auriol Dongmo from Portugal, who recorded a throw of 19.26 meters. Other German participants Alina Kenzel and Katharina Maisch finished in sixth and seventh place with throws of 18.89 and 18.67 meters, respectively.

Ogunleye’s victory last year at the Paris Olympics was a surprise, and she has previously secured a silver medal at the Indoor World Championships and a bronze at the Outdoor European Championships.

Christina Honsel Just Misses Medal

High jumper Christina Honsel narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth with a height of 1.92 meters. She lost the bronze medal due to a failed attempt, which put her behind the similarly-heighted Brit Engla Nilsson. Olympic champion and world record holder Yuliya Levchenko from Ukraine secured her title with a jump of 1.99 meters.

Ingebrigtsen Dominates 3,000 Meters

Norwegian running star Jakob Ingebrigtsen added to his accolades by winning both the 1,500 meters and the 3,000 meters, marking his seventh European Championship title. The 24-year-old completed the 3,000 meters in 7:48.37 minutes, while German competitors Florian Bremm and Maximilian Thorwirth placed seventh and ninth.

Incident Involving Dutch Runner

In the women’s 3,000-meter final, steeplechase specialist Lea Meyer finished in seventh place. A concerning incident occurred when Dutch runner Maureen Koster fell during a scuffle, hitting her head on the track and remaining down. She received medical attention away from the track behind a screen and was carried out on a stretcher.

Disappointment for German Pole Vaulters

The German pole vaulters had a disappointing outing in the final, with Bo Kanda Lita Baehre finishing seventh after clearing 5.70 meters, and Oleg Zernikel placing ninth with 5.60 meters. In the absence of Swedish star Armand Duplantis, the victory was shared between Greek athlete Emmanouil Karalis and Dutch competitor Menno Vloom, both achieving heights of 5.90 meters.
