National football goalkeeper Sophia Winkler will move from SGS Essen to Eintracht Frankfurt for the upcoming season, as confirmed by both Bundesliga clubs. This transfer also increases the likelihood of Eintracht goalkeeper Stina Johannes, who is part of the DFB squad, moving to VfL Wolfsburg. The 25-year-old is expected to replace long-time first-choice goalkeeper Merle Frohms, who will be leaving the club.
Winkler has signed a contract with Frankfurt that extends until 2029. The player made her DFB debut in November during a 6:0 victory against Switzerland in Zurich, earning high praise from national coach Christian Wück. „It feels like the right time to take the next steps this summer to continue developing and measuring myself at a top level,“ said the 21-year-old, who has been with Essen since 2017.
SGS coach Markus Högner emphasized Winkler’s potential, stating, „Since she is a national player, it’s clear that Sophia is an option for the big clubs. For me, she is perhaps the best goalkeeper in Germany, particularly for high balls. She has performed consistently for several years and has developed incredibly.“
