In the Champions League, SC Magdeburg has achieved fourth place in Group B after a 31:24 victory against Hungarian team Pick Szeged on Wednesday evening. Matthias Musche emerged as the top scorer for SCM, netting nine goals. This win allows SCM to avoid an upcoming round of 16 clash with league rivals Füchse Berlin, positioning them to potentially face either Dinamo Bucharest or Wisla Plock.
Despite missing key players Gisli Kristjansson and Omar Ingi Magnusson, Magdeburg started strong, with Sergey Hernandez performing well in goal early on (4:1/6). However, the visiting team adjusted their defense more effectively against SCM’s attacks, turning the game around (6:7/15). Several attempts by the Magdeburg team either hit the post or were saved by goalkeeper Roland Mikler. Although the SCM managed to recover from a three-goal deficit, they ended the first half tied.
After the break, Magdeburg continued to struggle with their positional play, requiring significant effort for each goal. Nevertheless, strong defensive work allowed SCM to build a small lead, although it was not long-lasting. Magdeburg remained competitive and extended their lead to four goals (24:20/50). As Szeged called their final timeout (52), it was clear that Magdeburg had found their rhythm, and the visitors could not threaten the Magdeburg success any longer.
