Renars Uscins and Xenia Smits have been awarded the title of Handball Players of the Year for 2024. The national player from TSV Hannover-Burgdorf and the national player from HB Ludwigsburg were selected through a public vote conducted by the sports magazine „Handballwoche.“
Uscins, 22, expressed his gratitude, saying, „Considering that this was my first proper year at this level, it is a huge recognition.“ Last year, he contributed to the German national team’s success by winning a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Paris. Meanwhile, Xenia Smits reached the Champions League final with her previous club, SG BBM Bietigheim, during the last season.
Since 1978, the Handball Players of the Year have been honored annually. The inaugural winner was Heiner Brand, who later became the national coach, while the record holder for the most titles is former national goalkeeper Andreas Thiel, with seven awards.
