Real Madrid experienced a blow in their pursuit of the Spanish football championship, faltering in their final preparations for the city derby in the Champions League. The Royals lost 1-2 (1-1) to Real Betis Sevilla in the Primera División.
After Brahim Diaz opened the scoring for the visitors from the capital in the 10th minute, Brazilian Johnny equalized in the first half, scoring in the 34th minute. The decisive goal for Sevilla came from former Real player Isco, who netted a penalty in the 54th minute.
With a victory this Sunday in their home match against Real Sociedad San Sebastián, league leaders FC Barcelona, managed by German coach Hansi Flick, could extend their lead over Real to three points. Both teams currently sit on 54 points. However, Atlético Madrid (53), Real’s opponent in the Champions League Round of 16, could also surpass them later that evening.
