In a surprising turn of events early in the Formula 1 season, four-time world champion Max Verstappen finds himself trailing behind the competition. At the McLaren double victory in Shanghai, Oscar Piastri claimed victory ahead of teammate Lando Norris, while Verstappen finished fourth in a struggling Red Bull.
After his win in Australia, Norris held onto his lead in the championship standings by securing second place. George Russell rounded out the podium in third place in his Mercedes, while Piastri celebrated his third career Grand Prix win, marking an excellent start to the season for McLaren.
Nico Hülkenberg, the only German driver in the field, finished in 18th place in his Sauber. The 37-year-old had surprised many with a seventh place finish in the season opener, earning six championship points in his first race after moving from the US team Haas.
McLaren’s Early Dominance
Piastri successfully defended his position at the start, having secured his first career pole position the day before. Teammate Norris quickly chased him down, moving past Russell into second place.
Despite a few mistakes in his qualifying session, where he finished third, Norris was considered a strong contender for victory following his previous win. However, he lost valuable championship points through errors.
Lewis Hamilton, now driving for Ferrari, applied pressure early on, having unexpectedly won the season’s first sprint race just 24 hours earlier. The 40-year-old showed significant improvement from his performance in Melbourne, where he finished tenth.
Verstappen’s Disappointment
As Piastri and Norris set the pace at the front, Verstappen struggled significantly. Within the first ten laps, he lost touch with the leaders and found himself in sixth place, fighting to avoid slipping even further back. He candidly expressed his concerns before the race, stating, “We are too slow.”
The dominant driver of previous years faced reality as Red Bull struggled under dry conditions without the chaos of Australia. However, he managed to overtake both Hamilton and Charles Leclerc towards the end of the race.
No Challenge from Norris
The race intensified during the tire changes, with Russell momentarily overtaking Norris thanks to an efficient pit stop. However, Norris quickly resumed his pursuit of Piastri, and the McLaren drivers continued to pull ahead, with Norris unable to challenge the impressive Piastri.
Despite expressing similar concerns about the car’s handling, both drivers showcased its superiority over the competition. With the next race set for the high-speed Suzuka circuit in Japan in two weeks, McLaren looks poised to continue their strong performance.
Meanwhile, Red Bull faces additional challenges, particularly with Verstappen’s teammate Liam Lawson, who has underperformed. The New Zealander’s last-place qualifying effort has raised speculation about a potential change in the lineup.
