Oscar Piastri has made history by securing his first-ever pole position in his Formula 1 career. The 23-year-old Australian clocked the fastest time of 1:30.641 minutes, earning him the top spot for the Grand Prix of China. The race is scheduled for Sunday at 8:00 AM (Sky and RTL) in Shanghai, where he will start from the front of the grid.
In a surprising turn, British Mercedes driver George Russell finished in second place. Meanwhile, the favored world championship leader Lando Norris, driving for McLaren, came in third.
Nico Hülkenberg, driving for Sauber, secured the twelfth position.
Norris Leads with a Narrow Advantage Before Second Race
Earlier in the day, record champion Lewis Hamilton celebrated his first victory in a Ferrari during the sprint. The 40-year-old Brit dominated the first short race of the year over 100 kilometers, finishing ahead of Piastri and reigning world champion Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.
World championship leader Norris had a mishap, finishing only in eighth place. The McLaren driver, who won the season opener in Australia, now leads the championship by a slim two points ahead of Verstappen, who qualified fourth. Last year, Verstappen won the Grand Prix of China ahead of Norris.
