Incident Reported During Training Session
The world number two in tennis, Iga Swiatek, was reportedly threatened by a man during a training session at the Miami tournament, according to BBC reports. The incident occurred last Saturday and was confirmed by the management team of the 23-year-old Polish player.
The management stated that the man was aggressive and mocking, and had previously sent her abusive messages through social media. According to the management, “The incident in Miami appears to be a direct transition from verbal online aggression to a real-world threat,” as reported by the BBC.
Security Concerns and Past Controversies
Neither the tournament organizers nor the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) have confirmed the incident or mentioned any increased security measures. The WTA did state that comprehensive security protocols are in place to ensure that any incidents are dealt with swiftly and effectively.
Swiatek has also been in the spotlight due to a doping suspension. Last August, she tested positive for the heart medication Trimetazidine, which she attributed to a contaminated medicine, resulting in a one-month ban. The World Anti-Doping Agency deemed her explanation plausible and did not appeal the decision.
Similar Incidents in Recent Tournaments
In a related incident, British player Emma Raducanu was a victim of stalking during the Dubai tournament in mid-February. A man who had followed her to previous tournaments in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Doha caused her distress during her second-round match, leading to her in tears. Raducanu lost the match, and the police later arrested the man.
