In a disappointing turn of events, former world champion Mats Hummels was sent off in the 11th minute, initiating AS Roma’s exit from the Europa League. The Italian team played nearly 80 minutes a man down, ultimately losing the round of 16 return match against Athletic Bilbao 3-1 (0-1).
Following the match, Hummels took to Instagram to apologize to fans and teammates, expressing strong self-criticism. He stated, „I let everyone down today with a mistake that was just stupid and terrible. Such matches used to be the ones my team could rely on me; now I messed it up, and that cost the club its dream of winning the Europa League,“ said the 36-year-old.
Hummels‘ red card was precipitated by a disastrous misplaced pass. As Bilbao striker Maroan Sannadi stood free in front of the goal, the former Dortmund player resorted to a desperate tackle. Referee Clément Turpin acted swiftly, issuing a straight red card for the foul. This incident was particularly unfortunate as Hummels had not been utilized in the previous three Europa League matches.
Nico Williams scored twice (45+3, 82 minutes) and Yuri Berchiche added another goal (68 minutes), punishing Hummels‘ grave error. Leandro Paredes‘ late penalty goal (90+3) proved too little, too late. Roma had previously won the first leg under coach Claudio Ranieri 2-1.
Media reports suggest that Hummels, who had a rocky start in the Italian capital and was initially not fielded, found his place in the team under new coach Ranieri and became a key player. However, it is now rumored that he may be returning to Germany after his stint abroad, to be closer to his family.
