Frankfurt’s Women Suffer Heavy Defeat Against Wolfsburg

Eintracht Frankfurt's women's team loses their Bundesliga lead after a significant 1:6 defeat to VfL Wolfsburg, with the new table leader being FC Bayern.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s women’s football team has relinquished their lead in the Bundesliga following a disappointing performance against VfL Wolfsburg. In a crucial match on the 15th matchday, the Hessian team lost decisively with a score of 1:6 (0:5) at the VW-Arena.

Wolfsburg Takes Control Early

Early goals from former national team captain Alexandra Popp in the 3rd minute and Lineth Beerensteyn in the 8th minute put Frankfurt on the back foot. Janina Minge added to the score with a penalty in the 28th minute, followed by Lena Lattwein scoring another penalty in first-half stoppage time (45+1). Pia-Sophie Wolter’s own goal in the 45+7 minute ensured a commanding 5:0 lead at halftime.

Second Half Dominance

Vivien Endemann extended Wolfsburg’s advantage to 6:0 in the 60th minute. Frankfurt, who struggled to make an impact throughout the match, finally found the net when Carlotta Wamser scored in the 85th minute. However, Laura Freigang’s attempt from a penalty, resulting from a foul by Sveindis Jonsdottir on Wamser, was saved by Wolfsburg’s new goalkeeper Anneke Borbe in the 87th minute.

Injury Woes for Frankfurt

The early exit of national player Sara Doorsoun due to injury after just 12 minutes further unsettled Frankfurt’s defense. Before scoring her sixth goal, Endemann had already hit the inside of the post.

Wolfsburg Bounces Back

The Wolfsburg team, managed by Tommy Stroot, made a strong comeback after their disappointing cup exit against Hoffenheim (0:1) earlier in the week. In contrast, Eintracht Frankfurt faced their second consecutive defeat against a top team, having lost to Bayern Munich in the cup (1:4 after extra time).
