German ice hockey star Leon Draisaitl has helped the Edmonton Oilers secure another significant win in the North American NHL league. The Cologne native assisted on the first goal during a power play in the Oilers‘ 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers, increasing his point streak to 18 consecutive games. This was already his 102nd scoring point of the season, making him the top scorer with 49 goals.
With this 39th win, the Oilers solidified their second position in the Pacific Division, trailing only the Vegas Golden Knights. The Golden Knights unexpectedly lost 0-3 to the Detroit Red Wings, where Moritz Seider did not register any points.
Thanks to their 32nd victory and the Oilers‘ assistance, the Red Wings moved within two points of the Rangers in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers currently hold the last wild card spot that allows for playoff participation.
In contrast, Nico Sturm faced an unexpected defeat with the favored Florida Panthers, who lost 2-4 to the New York Islanders. Additionally, Philipp Grubauer did not play for the Seattle Kraken, who fell 2-3 in overtime against the league-leading Winnipeg Jets.
