Tennis Matches in Madrid Canceled Due to Power Outage

A significant power outage in Spain has led to the cancellation of all tennis matches in Madrid, impacting players and events at the tournament.

In a major disruption, a widespread power outage across Spain has affected the ongoing tennis tournament in Madrid. All remaining matches scheduled for the day and night have been canceled, primarily for safety reasons, as announced by the organizers on the platform X.

The match between Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov and British player Jacob Fearnley was interrupted while Dimitrov was leading 6-4, 5-4. Additionally, the Spider Cam, an overhead cable camera, became stuck above the Centre Court.

The electronic line-calling system, which replaces linesmen at the Masters 1000 tournament, also ceased to function, creating further complications. American player Coco Gauff experienced the outage firsthand; she was being interviewed after her victory over Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic when her microphone stopped working due to the power loss. According to the ATP, at the time of the outage, two singles matches and one doubles match were in progress, and food vendors and sales booths at the Caja Magica venue also lost power.

During the interruption, the German pay-TV channel Sky aired highlights of Alexander Zverev’s previous match against Spanish player Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, which Zverev won in three sets on Sunday.

The cause of the significant power outage, which also impacted parts of Portugal and France, remains unclear.
