Oliver Baumann, the goalkeeper for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, appeared reluctant to engage with further media following his rounds of interviews after a mishap in the Bundesliga match against FC St. Pauli. The national team goalkeeper had already explained his blunder that resulted in a 0:1 loss during the crucial relegation battle.
In the 51st minute, Baumann described the incident as having gone “terribly wrong” while speaking on the streaming service DAZN. The 34-year-old attempted to pass the ball to teammate Tom Bischof but failed to notice St. Pauli’s Philipp Treu lurking behind him. Treu intercepted the ball, lifted it over Baumann, and set it up for Noah Weißhaupt, who scored with ease, marking his first goal for the club.
Coach Christian Ilzer labeled the incident as a “perception error” on Baumann’s part. As a result of this defeat, Hoffenheim finds themselves once again entrenched in the relegation battle, with FC St. Pauli closing the gap to only one point as they sit in 15th place.
“We had a bit of momentum in recent weeks, but today it wasn’t good enough,” Baumann reflected. “We knew it would likely be difficult until the end. And yes, that’s how it is.”
Baumann, however, can take a brief respite from the relegation struggle as he heads to join the national team for two matches in the Nations League quarter-finals against Italy. When asked if he is the clear number one for coach Julian Nagelsmann, Baumann responded somewhat curtly, “You need to ask him.”
Despite the error, Baumann did showcase his skills as a top goalkeeper by thwarting several more chances from the Hamburg side. Unfortunately, this was little consolation for him or his team on that evening.
