Vinzenz Geiger has won his fourth medal at the Nordic Combined World Championships, taking home a bronze medal. The 27-year-old athlete celebrated his achievement following a strong performance in the cross-country skiing event. Geiger was only surpassed in the final competition by Norway’s dominant winner Jarl Magnus Riiber and his compatriot Jörgen Graabak.
On Friday, Geiger had already secured gold with the team. Additionally, he brings home a silver medal from the mixed team event and another bronze from the first individual competition in Trondheim. Geiger played a crucial role in all four of Germany’s medals, whereas the previous World Championships yielded four silver medals for the team.
Riiber Claims Third Title in Trondheim
The battle for gold was essentially decided after the ski jumping segment from the large hill. Riiber commenced the 10-kilometer cross-country race with a 1:14 minute lead after a jump of 139 meters. Thus, the focus shifted to the race for the remaining podium spots. A thrilling competition unfolded among six athletes, especially as Geiger, who started in ninth place with a significant deficit, made an impressive comeback.
For Riiber, this marks his third gold medal at his farewell World Championships on home ground. Due to a chronic bowel disease, the 27-year-old will retire after this season, leaving the Nordic Combined without its most influential athlete of recent years. “There is no debate, he is the best of all time,” said Olympic champion Geiger recently.
