The adverse weather conditions in Trondheim have led to the cancellation of the Nordic Combined World Championship event. This announcement was made by the International Ski Federation (FIS) in Norway. Strong winds have caused disturbances in the city and around the Granasen Ski Center since early Thursday morning.
The ski jumping event, which was already rescheduled to a later time, was initially set to take place at 12:30 PM and was postponed three times by approximately 15 minutes before being completely cancelled.
Challenges with Weather Conditions
“It’s not easy. The conditions change very quickly. This makes it impossible to hold a safe competition,” stated German team coach Eric Frenzel in his initial response.
A special emergency committee will now determine when the team competition can be rescheduled. Additionally, Thursday’s schedule at the Nordic Ski World Championships in Norway includes the cross-country relay and the ski jumping team competition. The FIS emphasizes the importance of ensuring that the championship events receive adequate television coverage. The final individual event in the Nordic combination is set for Saturday.
Organizational Difficulties
The strong winds have also posed several organizational challenges. The cross-country stadium remained closed due to storm conditions for an extended period, leading to extremely long queues to the competition venue. Safety measures included the removal of banners.
In recent days, the wind in Trondheim had not been an issue, as competitions were conducted smoothly despite persistent heavy rain.
Germany is considered a strong medal contender in the team competition.
