Following recent headlines regarding Joshua Kimmich, Bayern Munich’s Sports Director Christoph Freund has announced that a „very timely“ decision regarding his future with the club is forthcoming. „We are in direct conversation with Jo, and that is the most important thing,“ Freund stated after Bayern’s 3-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart, in which Kimmich was absent due to injury.
Speculation Surrounding Kimmich’s Contract
Freund did not provide specific comments in response to reports from „Bild“ and others that Bayern had withdrawn their contract offer to Kimmich. Regarding rumors of foreign offers for the 30-year-old midfielder, Freund remarked, „I haven’t received any. I don’t know. There is so much speculation, so much is being written and reported.“
Respectful Communication
Sporting director Max Eberl also refrained from revealing details about the current status of negotiations. „We know what we have in each other. We treat each other with a lot of respect, and: We talk,“ he said. Eberl emphasized that their discussions have always been on equal footing.
He expressed that he is not skeptical about the situation but made it clear: „No one is above the club, and if a player decides differently, he decides differently. Then FC Bayern will continue on as well.“ However, he indicated that they are not at that point yet.
Support for Kimmich’s Continuity
Freund emphasized that they have never provided updates on the status of contract negotiations: „We will not do that now either. I can only stress that we have had really good and fair discussions with Jo over the past months. And we will continue to do so.“ Kimmich’s contract with the current clear league leaders is valid until June 30.
Teammate Leon Goretzka responded to a related question at DAZN, stating he would be pleased if Kimmich continued to play for Bayern after that date.
Khedira’s Perspective on Kimmich
Former World Champion Sami Khedira has described Kimmich’s retention as „indispensable“ for Bayern. „Bayern Munich needs Joshua Kimmich,“ he asserted. „Not only as a player but even more so as a personality, as a leader, because you will lose Manuel Neuer in the next one or two years. You will lose Thomas Müller in the next one or two years,“ Khedira explained. He questioned who would then lead the Bayern team and noted, „There will be no German national player left to take on the leadership role.“
