Linus Straßer has added a medal to the German team’s tally at the Ski World Championships, clinching bronze in the final slalom event. The 32-year-old from Munich celebrated his first individual podium finish at a major championship, finishing behind new world champion Loic Meillard from Switzerland and Norway’s Atle Lie McGrath, who took silver.
This achievement spared the German Ski Association (DSV) from the embarrassment of leaving the alpine World Championships without any medals for the first time since 2007. Notably, the French skier Clement Noel, who was leading in the slalom after the first run, missed the final due to a mistake, allowing Straßer to secure his place on the podium.
In the two weeks leading up to this event, the DSV athletes had not secured any medals, with the only positive surprise coming from outsider Emma Aicher, who finished sixth in both the downhill and super-G events. On Saturday, Lena Dürr, one of the favorites in the slalom, finished in eighth place. Nevertheless, Straßer’s performance, celebrated by his wife Maria and daughter Marta at the finish line, brought some relief for the German team on the final competition day in Austria.
