SC Paderborn has fought hard to temporarily secure the fifth position in the 2. Bundesliga, winning against promoted team Preußen Münster 2-0 (0-0) on Friday evening.
Marvin Mehlem (81st minute) and substitute Ilyas Ansah (84th minute) scored in front of 14,534 spectators at the Paderborn Arena, marking the team’s first home victory since late November. With 37 points from 22 matches, coach Lukas Kwasniok’s team has momentarily surpassed Fortuna Düsseldorf, who will play against Hertha BSC Berlin on Saturday. Meanwhile, Münster remains winless in five consecutive matches and risks slipping into the relegation zone on Saturday.
Unlike the thrilling 3-3 draw in the first leg, the audience in the Paderborn Arena witnessed a lackluster performance for much of the match. Both teams displayed little willingness to take risks, showing neither creativity nor productivity during the first half.
The second half, however, started with more energy. Mehlem’s shot that hit the post shortly after the restart (48th minute) served as a wake-up call. The previously disappointing Paderborn side appeared more determined and secured a well-deserved victory with two goals in three minutes.
