Feyenoord Rotterdam has moved closer to the Round of 16 in the Champions League. The Dutch cup winner triumphed in the first leg of the playoff round against Italy’s AC Milan with a narrow victory of 1-0, thanks to an early goal from standout Igor Paixao in the 3rd minute.
Benfica Lisbon also established a favorable position by defeating AS Monaco 1-0 away, while FC Bruges secured a 2-1 home win against Atalanta Bergamo. The return matches are scheduled for next Tuesday.
Bruges‘ Controversial Winning Goal
In Monaco, Evangelos Pavlidis netted the crucial goal for Lisbon in the 48th minute against a team that included former German international Thilo Kehrer. Monaco was forced to play with one less player after Moatasem Al-Musrati received a second yellow card in the 52nd minute.
FC Bruges‘ victory over Bergamo was marked by a contentious penalty awarded in stoppage time. Substitute Gustaf Nilsson was lightly touched in the face during a challenge, leading to the penalty decision. Nilsson himself took the shot and converted it to seal the match at 2-1 in the 94th minute.
